A Brief Guide To Writing A Credit Repair Letter

When it comes to writing a credit repair letter, there are several things that you need to take into your careful consideration. There is a specific procedure that you have to follow when you notice some errors in your credit report and want to get the same rectified. It takes time and efforts. However, it is very important for you to keep in mind that the process is not a very complicated one and you do not necessarily need to hire a credit repair company to do the same on your behalf. If you are willing to spend some time for it, you can do it on your own. But if you are confused and do not know how to proceed, you always have an option to hire a credit repair agency. In that case, you will not even have to write the letter yourself. If you choose to do it on your own, you must keep the following things in mind.

Highlight The Errors

Before you start writing a credit repair letter, obviously the first thing you have to do is to highlight all those entries that are incorrect and/or incomplete. It is important for you to keep in mind that you are entitled to get a free credit report at least once every year. While you are reviewing the entries, you may have to face difficulties in understanding certain terms and symbols. You can find the descriptions of those terms and symbols at the back of the report. Please note that you have to highlight only those entries that are negative and not correct; you do not have to mark all negative entries. Negative entries that are correct cannot be removed by filing a dispute.

Introduction And Body Of The Letter

While you are writing a credit repair letter, you will have to explain what the marked negative entries are all about. You need to state a few things clearly on your letter, such as why the entries are incorrect, when those entries were posted, which company posted that item, the date it was posted on, and other such things. If you are attaching certain documents, receipts, or bills in support of your claim, do not forget to mention the same in your letter. Include a list of the documents you have attached. You have to write all these things in the introduction and body of your letter.

Closing

You are advised to include some suggestions on what can be done to rectify the errors at the closing of the letter. While writing a credit repair letter, you should also not forget to mention that you are aware of the US laws that say your letter must be responded to within thirty days after receiving it and that you are expecting a prompt response from them.

Send A Follow Up Letter If The Response Doesn’t Come Within 30 Days

If you do not get any response from them within thirty days, the next step is to send them a follow up letter. In this letter, you have to remind them that you have already sent them, a letter that they have not yet responded to. Inform them that you are still expecting them to take necessary actions and correct the information on your credit report and that if they fail to do so within the next thirty days, you are going to file a complaint against them, as it is your legal right. Do not forget to mention that you also want them to send the revised report after making the correction.

You need to make two copies of the letter. One copy should be sent to the credit bureau that reported it and another copy to the company that the negative entries belong to. Overall, writing a credit repair letter is not a difficult task; you just have to be clear and concise about whatever you are writing. Do not make things complicated by writing a long story about how frustrated you are because of the incorrect entries. Keep the letter to the point and then wait and monitor the progress.
