A Step-by-Step Guide to Filing Dispute for Errors in Experian Annual Credit Report

There are three major credit bureaus that maintain your annual credit report – Experian, Equifax, and TransUnion. When you have to file a dispute for errors in your credit file, you have to file the application separately with every bureau. There are certain steps that you need to follow in this regard. It is advisable that even if you are not having any financial problem, you must review your reports at least once a year. Sometimes, the reports show a lower score just because of certain incomplete or incorrect entries. It is important for you to understand that a poor FICO score does not only create difficulty in obtaining low rate loans and insurance, but it may also restrict your employment opportunities (there have been instances where people have been denied promotion even though they deserved it just because they had bad credit). Follow these four steps to contact Experian and file your dispute.

Order a Free Copy of the Report

Every US citizen is entitled to get a free copy of annual credit report at least once every year. Besides that, you may request for an additional free copy every time you are denied for an employment or loan. In most cases, when you place your request, you get reports from all three agencies. You do not need to submit your application with each agency separately. However, when it comes to filing disputes for errors, you must send your application separately to each agency.

Do a Thorough Review

Study the reports thoroughly a couple of times. Once you become familiar with the format, you should go ahead and examine each and every entry properly. Make notes of unfamiliar entries or mistakes on your annual credit report. You should pay special attention to the names and addresses of the creditors and the amount of debt that is showing on each entry.

Gather Evidences

If there are certain debts that you have already paid but are not showing up on the file, you should collect the payment receipts so that you could provide the same as proof when you file the dispute. In the absence of the documents that can support your position, it will be very difficult for you to get the errors corrected even if you know that the information out there is not correct.

Prepare Your Letter

The next step is to prepare a letter addressed to Experian. Make sure you include your full name, address, entries that you are for, the reasons why you disagree, and the date.

Mail the Letter and Relevant Documents

Before you wrap up your letter and relevant documents in envelope, you must first make two copies of everything that you are sending. Do not forget to attach a copy of the annual credit report with the letter. Mail the letter and the documents to Experian: P.O. Box 2104 Allen, TX 75013.

What if You Do Not Receive a Response?

It is legally mandatory for the bureaus to respond to your dispute within thirty days. If you do not receive any response from them, you can give them a call at (888) 397-3742 and find out the status. If they still do not give you a clear reply, you can take legal action against them as per the procedure explained in the Fair Credit Reporting Act.

There are certain legal rights that the laws have provided to consumers. While you are filing a dispute for errors in your annual , make sure you know how to use those rights.
